All joking aside Cartel does a bunch of things really well. For one thing, their pioneer spot in Tempe is designed. In fact, it was actually expanded and redesigned twice! Here's a picture of what the space looked like when I first went there:
It may be hard to see, but it was essentially one big room, separated with the bike wheel wall. A pretty small starter space. But the owner of this shop ended up acquiring the two next door spaces and expanding into this massive space.
As you can probably tell it's huge. They kept the bike wall but added all kinds of other seating options, including a built-in and a few rows of metal tables. I've heard that the owner makes a lot of the furniture himself, but who knows if that's really true. Unfortunately, Cartel is also a bizarrely uncomfortable place. The couches are very saggy and all other seating is very hard. There are a few high tops in the back which I don't prefer but people seem to like them. There is an E shaped built-in that consumes the entire back room. It's an interesting design that I think is almost more for reclining.
The other thing Cartel has done really well is marketing. Their packaging and carry-out designs are pretty on-point.
